Hideaway 21
Finnish Hideaways in Sweden?
Finnskogen, the “Forest of the Finns,” is an extensive forested area on the border of Sweden and Norway that is steeped in Finnish history. This region takes its name from the immigration of Finnish foresters, known as the Skogfinner or Forest Finns, who settled here in the 17th century. Originally from Finland, the Skogfinner were experts in swidden farming, a method that involved clearing forests and burning fields to create new farmland. This traditional “slash-and-burn” technique was a central part of their way of life. The Finnish immigrants brought not only their agricultural techniques but also their own language and culture, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
This pristine natural area, located in Sweden’s Värmland province with dense forests, sparkling lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, is perfect if you’re seeking something different, looking for peace and nature, or if you’ve visited Finland before. Whether you want to hike, kayak, cycle, spot wildlife, or in winter ski, cross-country ski, go snowshoe hiking, or join a snowmobile safari, Finnskogen offers it all. In this beautiful region, we found three unique cabins, which we’ve added to our offerings because of the Finnish roots of the area. The three cottages are situated on the spacious grounds of the very hospitable owners, who respect your privacy but are also available to provide outdoor activities and information. They can arrange a tasty breakfast or evening meal upon request and for an additional fee, though you’re also welcome to take care of your own meals.
This cozy, red cabin is situated slightly elevated at the tree line, offering a lovely view of the grounds and the mountains on the horizon. A steep staircase or a sloping path leads to the front door, which opens into the inviting living room with a comfortable couch and a traditional Swedish dining area. The spacious double bed, made from pallets, is very comfortable and set in a cozy sleeping nook in the living room.
The small kitchen is compact but practical, equipped with a fridge, a two-burner stove, and a microwave. The narrow bathroom includes a toilet, sink, and shower. Although there is a second bedroom with two single beds, we feel that this cabin, due to the smaller water heater, is more suitable for a maximum of two people. The terrace is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful view. A small wood stove (firewood available for purchase from the owners) provides warmth and ambiance.
Note: This retreat is all about peace and quiet, so there’s no TV or Wi-Fi reception.
The surrounding area offers many outdoor activities, from short walks to challenging hikes. Kilometers of trails wind through forests, along lakes, and past historical sites. Along the way, you might spot a moose, deer, or various birds. The Finnskogsleden, a long-distance hiking trail, takes you through the heart of this remarkable area, but there are also lovely shorter routes. We hiked to the Brattfallet waterfall, a circular trail of about 7 kilometers. It’s especially beautiful in autumn, but the waterfall is also accessible from the parking lot in winter.
